چکیده

An artificial limb is a type of prosthesis that replaces a missing extremity, such as arms or legs. The type of artificial limb required is determined by the availability of the left over stump after amputation. The main problem faced by the patients after amputation or paralysis is muscle atrophy caused due to nonfunctionality of the stump. The limited functionality leads to very limited flow of oxygenated blood to the stump causing muscle wasting which is a very big medical problem. Moreover after amputation or paralysis the patients become dependent on others for their basic functions or jobs which lead to serious psychological problems. This paper deals with the design of an upper limb below elbow prosthetic which can be used by both amputees and paralyzed patients to bring about simple hand movements independently by the patient. The electro-mechanical prosthetic arm will be a hollow shell structure supported by a neck and waist harness for the patient‟s support. General Terms Design of Prosthetic, Prototype development

The value of stump split skin grafting following amputation for trauma in adult upper and lower limb amputees.

One hundred and twenty adult patients were reviewed in whom split skin grafts were applied to the stump following traumatic amputation of the upper limb (44 amputees) or lower limb (76 amputees). The average follow-up period was seven and a half years after initial amputation. There was delay in prosthetic fitting in all patients. Approximately one third of patients complained of occasional min...

Prosthetic use in adult upper limb amputees: a comparison of the body powered and electrically powered prostheses.

Three hundred and fourteen adult upper limb amputees were reviewed retrospectively at the Ontario Workers' Compensation Board. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the use of body and electrically powered prostheses. Follow-up ranged from 1 to 49 years with a mean of 15 years. Results indicated that complete or useful acceptance of an electrically powered prosthesis was reported by 69 of 83 amp...

Balance in lower limb child amputees.

Postural stability of five unilateral above-knee amputee children was measured when wearing the SACH and the experimental Child Amputee Prosthetic Project (CAPP) prosthetic foot. Excursions of the centre of pressure of the supportive forces were recorded via force platform during sustained weight-shifting forward, backward, left, right, and during normal standing. Visual proprioception effects ...

Intuitive control of a prosthetic elbow

Many transhumeral amputees deplore the lack of functionality of their prosthesis, mostly caused by a counterintuitive control strategy. This work is the first implementation of an automatic prosthesis control approach based on natural coordinations between upper limb joints and IMU-based humeral orientation measurement. One healthy individual was able to use the prosthetic elbow, fitted with a ...
